The market bounced back with moderate gains amid mixed global cues on Wednesday. The Sensex rose 53.49 points to 26721.45 and the Nifty advanced 20.70 points to 8180.80.
Benchmarks also reacted positively to better-than-expected GDP data at 7.9 percent for the fourth quarter FY16 and five-year high of 7.6 percent for full year.
Axis Bank, ITC, M&M, BPCL and Tata Power were early gainers while Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, NTPC and SBI declined.
The Indian rupee opened flat at 67.24 per dollar against previous close of 67.26.
The 30-share index was trading at 26736, up 68 points or 0.26 per cent. It touched a high of 26754.00 and a low of 26671.86 in morning trade.
The Nifty50 was trading at 8176 up 16 points or 0.20 per cent. It touched a high of 8,187.90 and a low of 8,176.15 in the first 30 minutes of trade.
The S&P BSE Midcap Index was up 0.12 per cent and BSE S&P Smallcap Index was trading 0.23 per cent higher.
Axis Bank (up 2.5 per cent), Adani Ports (up 1.7 per cent), ITC (up 1.3 per cent) and Lupin (up 1.2 per cent) were the major Sensex gainers.
Tata Motors (down 1.1 per cent), NTPC (down 0.7 per cent), ICICI Bank (down 0.7 per cent), HDFC Bank (down 0.48 per cent) were major Sensex loser.
