Dhanbad: Prices of fruits have fallen in the coal belt due to over
supply of fruits in the wholesale market. Traders of Barwadda bazaar
samiti got 150 trucks of fruits from different states anticipating a
huge demand during Chhath but the demand fell short of their
expectations.
Dhirendra Shaw, a fruit retailer of Hatia, told TOI, "We have a huge
stock but this year, the demand is not up to our expectations. In the
previous years, most of our fruits were sold out by this time but
customers and devotees are yet to turn up at our shops. We are really
worried about the sales. If the fruits don't get sold, they will perish
and we will incur a huge loss." Kashmiri apples and coconuts are
worst-hit. Normally, apples are available in the retail market at Rs
80-100 per kilogram but during festivals, it soars up to Rs 100-140.
This year, the supply has exceeded the demand and retailers are selling
apples at Rs 60-80 only.
Baldev Arora, a fruit wholesaler of Barwadda mandi, said this year there has been poor production of oranges in Nagpur, due to which its prices are high. Bananas have been imported from and due to high freight charges, it has become expensive. Retailers are selling bananas, essential for Chhath, at Rs 40-60 per dozen, added Arora. Saroj Singh, resident of Chiragora and a Chhath devotee said, "We have planned our puja with less fruits and more home-made dishes," she added.
